Medical Officer (General Practitioner), Zambia - Africa

We are recruiting for an experienced General Practitioner with exceptional Emergency Medicine skills and an adventurous spirit, with the desire to travel and work in a different clinical setting, on either a fixed term or a rotational basis in a not-for-profit clinic in Zambia. 

You will be providing general medical, trauma and emergency services to both members of the local community and to the expat employees and their families of the local Mining Company who sponsor these clinics.

We are recruiting for an experienced General Practitioner with exceptional Emergency Medicine skills and an adventurous spirit, with the desire to travel and work in a different clinical setting, on either a fixed term or a rotational basis in a not-for-profit clinic in Zambia. 

You will be providing general medical, trauma and emergency services to both members of the local community and to the expat employees and their families of the local Mining Company who sponsor these clinics.

The Role

You will work with a team of approximately 5 Doctors, local and expat. 

Examining and treating all mine employees and contractors presenting to the clinic with illnesses and injuries.

Provide outpatient and emergency treatment at the clinic

Ensure that patients requiring in-hospital treatment are transferred once they have been properly stabilised, including patients kept for observation who have failed to stabilise after 4 hours.

Monitor and manage patients with chronic diseases, referring as needed for secondary level or specialist assessment and treatment.

Ensuring that treatment is given according to treatment guidelines or protocols.

Salary is negotiable dependent upon experience and on work-pattern however net salary will be circa US$10,000 per month plus accommodation and travel provided. There are a variety of different working patterns: 

1. 6 weeks on / 2 weeks off OR;

2. 6 weeks on / 3 weeks off OR;

3. Full Time On Site

Qualifications and experience

Primary Medical degree, i.e. MBBS

General Practice/Family Medicine qualification (e.g. MRCGP)

You must have at least four years GP post-graduate experience 

You will need full with specialist medical registration in General Practice from your country of origin

You will also need several years experience working in emergency medicine in remote areas.  

You need to be able to deal with complex trauma and emergency medicine cases, including procedures like putting in chest drains, sedation and intubation of seriously ill patients

You also need to have experience in dealing with malaria presentations

It is vital that you hold an up to date ACLS, ATLS or BASICS certification.

Any prior experience in remote site clinic operations, occupational health services would be an advantage but is not essential.

The Location

Zambia is located in Southern Africa and has a population of 13.5 million with English being the official language.

The country has a tropical climate - its higher altitude ensures a subtropical feel during the cool season of May to August. Zambia is known as one of the safest countries in Africa and is renowned as a top safari destination. The country is home to seventeen magnificent waterfalls, including the world famous Victoria Falls and offers first class white water rafting, kayaking and fishing.
